The standard setup uses a 59-tooth wheel, because two moons times a rounded 29.5-day lunar month equals 59.
But here's the catch. The real lunar cycle isn't 29.5 days. It's 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes, and change. That little half-day rounding error piles up, and after roughly two and a half years your moon is off by a full day.
So what did watchmakers do? They went to war with a rounding error. High-end movements use more complex gearing that stays accurate for 122 years before needing a one-day correction. A few independents pushed it past 500 years. Someone sat at a bench and engineered a wheel train that won't drift for five centuries, to display something nobody needs, in a window smaller than your thumbnail.
I find that genuinely moving.
